Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned
Is a Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle Worth It?
Buying a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz can be a great way to get the vehicle you want without buying new. Going Certified Pre-Owned adds another layer to that decision: manufacturer eligibility requirements, a detailed inspection, warranty coverage and additional benefits. Whether that's worth it depends on what matters most to you.
A Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle can be worth considering if you want the lower cost of a pre-owned vehicle with additional manufacturer-backed protections. A qualifying Mercedes-Benz must meet age, mileage, maintenance and vehicle-history requirements before certification. Certified vehicles also receive a detailed inspection and are backed by any remaining New Vehicle Limited Warranty, followed by a 12-month, unlimited-mile Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty.
What does Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned actually mean?
“Certified” isn't simply another word for used.
Mercedes-Benz has specific requirements a vehicle must meet before it can become part of its Certified Pre-Owned program. That creates a meaningful distinction between a Mercedes-Benz that is simply being sold pre-owned and one carrying the manufacturer's CPO certification.
To be considered for Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned status, a vehicle must meet the program's eligibility requirements.
- Be a model 6 years old or newer
- Have fewer than 75,000 miles
- Have been serviced according to schedule
- Include a CARFAX Vehicle History Report
- Pass the applicable Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned inspection
- Complete a road test performed as part of the certification process
What is checked before a Mercedes-Benz becomes Certified Pre-Owned?
The inspection is one of the biggest reasons shoppers consider a CPO vehicle in the first place.
For applicable internal-combustion Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the Certified Pre-Owned inspection includes more than 165 points. Mercedes-Benz says technicians review the exterior structure and condition, interior finishes and safety equipment, along with mechanical systems such as the engine, transmission, electrical systems, fluids and filters.
Mercedes-Benz-approved tires are also checked, and applicable recall campaigns and scheduled services must be completed before the vehicle is certified.
The process also includes a road test covering areas such as steering, brakes, suspension, drivetrain operation, ride quality, noise and vibration.
What about Certified Pre-Owned electric vehicles?
Mercedes-Benz notes that the 165+ point inspection applies only to certain Certified Pre-Owned vehicles with internal-combustion engines. Electric vehicles use different inspection points, and inspection requirements can vary based on vehicle type, age, mileage and other factors.
How does the Mercedes-Benz CPO warranty work?
This is where CPO can become especially appealing compared with buying a typical pre-owned vehicle.
Every Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz is backed by any remaining portion of the original 4-year/50,000-mile Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Once that coverage expires, the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty provides an additional 12 months of coverage with unlimited miles. If the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty has already expired before the CPO vehicle is purchased, the CPO Limited Warranty takes effect at the time of delivery.
Mercedes-Benz also offers optional Certified Pre-Owned Extended Limited Warranty coverage for either one or two additional years with unlimited miles.
Coverage under the CPO Limited Warranty includes components such as the engine, powertrain, suspension, steering, electrical systems, climate control, audio and navigation systems, central locking and more, subject to the terms and exclusions of the warranty.

Certified Pre-Owned vs. used Mercedes-Benz: What's the difference?
A non-certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz can still be an excellent vehicle. The difference is that CPO gives you a defined manufacturer program behind the vehicle rather than relying only on the condition and coverage of that individual used car.
| Area | Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned | Other Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz |

What else comes with a Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle?
The warranty gets most of the attention, but the CPO program includes a few other protections that are easy to overlook.
24/7 Roadside Assistance
As part of CPO warranty coverage, Mercedes-Benz provides complimentary Roadside Assistance for situations such as a jump-start, tire change or running out of fuel.
7-Day / 500-Mile Exchange Privilege
Mercedes-Benz provides an exchange privilege during the first seven days or 500 miles, whichever comes first, allowing an eligible CPO vehicle to be exchanged for another Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz subject to program terms.
Trip Interruption Coverage
If a warranty-covered breakdown occurs more than 100 miles from home and causes an unexpected overnight stay, Mercedes-Benz provides reimbursement for eligible expenses up to $300 per day for as many as three days.
Nationwide Dealer Support
Mercedes-Benz CPO warranty coverage is supported through authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers, giving owners access to the brand's dealer network when covered repairs are needed.

So, is Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned worth it?
For many shoppers, the value of CPO isn't simply that the vehicle is pre-owned. It's knowing more about what had to happen before that vehicle could be certified — and what protection comes with it afterward.
If you're choosing between two similar Mercedes-Benz vehicles, CPO may be especially appealing if warranty coverage, documented vehicle history and the manufacturer's inspection process matter to you.
On the other hand, certification doesn't automatically make one vehicle the right choice. Price, mileage, condition, equipment, maintenance history and how long you plan to own the vehicle still matter.
The best comparison is usually vehicle against vehicle. Look at the price and condition of the Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz you're considering, understand how much warranty coverage remains and compare that with the alternatives available to you.
That's when the additional value of CPO becomes much easier to judge.
Who should consider a Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz?
CPO tends to make the most sense for someone who likes the value of buying pre-owned but still wants some of the assurances normally associated with buying a newer vehicle.
It can also be worth a closer look if you're shopping a Mercedes-Benz with significant technology or luxury equipment and would feel more comfortable having manufacturer-backed warranty coverage after the original new-vehicle warranty ends.
And because CPO vehicles must meet Mercedes-Benz eligibility standards before certification, the program gives shoppers another way to narrow a large pre-owned market down to vehicles that have gone through a defined certification process.
